‘Immediate measures’ on the cards to curb second Covid wave | The Express Tribune

Prime Minister Imran Khan has called a meeting of the National Coordination Committee (NCC) on Tuesday as cases surge in Pakistan amid second Covid-19 wave.

The country witnessed 1,123 new coronavirus cases in a single day — the highest in over three months.

As per the updated statistics on the government’s official Covid portal, 12 people also succumbed to the virus in a day, taking the death toll to 6,835 in the country.

“NCOC [National Command and Operation Centre] discussed additional measures today to control the rising spread of Covid-19,” Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar wrote on his official Twitter handle.

He said that recommendations will be tabled in the NCC meeting being called for tomorrow (Tuesday).

“Need to take immediate measures which have the most impact on disease spread without curtailing economic activity,” he further said.

The NCOC had recently disclosed that the average positivity rate of the disease had risen by 40% and warned against another lockdown if the SOPs continued to be violated.

The national body on the country’s coronavirus response had also expressed its concerns over the increasing number of hospital admissions and deaths from the virus.

Earlier, Umar had stressed for strict implementation of precautionary measures to ward off the second wave of novel coronavirus pandemic in the country.

‘Educational institutions not being closed’

Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mehmood had refuted rumours regarding the closure of schools.

“It is again clarified that educational institutions are NOT being closed. We will continue to monitor the situation as health of the students, teachers and staff is very important but at the moment no such decision has been made,” he said in a tweet.

The educational institutions reopened in Pakistan in September after the NCOC nod following significant decrease in Covid cases.
